During the summer I tend to work outdoors rather than in the studio. We have such a very short period of wonderful weather and it is nice to make the best of it.

When I am working outdoors I tend to loosen the shoot up and spend lots of time running around behind the children, literally playing with them and talking constantly. This gives me the opportunity to photograph them when they are least expecting it.

I have two suggestions when working with kids and find they work every single time. First show them the camera, let them see what you are doing and even if they are really little let them look at it EVERY SINGLE TIME they ask to even if it feels annoying, you can't underestimate the value of a cooperative child and they will cooperate if they like you and they will like you if you show them the camera :0)

Secondly make them feel like the whole thing revolves around them, I tend to find out who their fav super hero is in advance and then tell them that is EXACTLY how super they are actually being, encourage encourage encourage - never mind impressing Mom or soothing Dad, if you can't win over the littlest in the family you are sunk.

My clients know that in the studio means formal "posed" shots while on location it is more about capturing the relationship between the family, showing the love they share and capturing those special magic moments. Although I do direct the shoot, I tend to rather watch for moments and then grow and expand on them rather than in studio where I will literally say, chin down, look right etc etc

I always try to have two locations in mind (within very close traveling distance, don't waste time, kiddies get tired and bored very quickly), this keeps things interesting and gives different lighting options and is especially important if the first location tanks.

I always conduct these shoots as early in the morning as possible (a) kiddies are likely to be fresh and willing (b) the light is much much softer and shadows don't factor and (c) if you are using a public venue you are far less likely to encounter members of the public - shoots start at 9am and last 60mins

Always remember being invited into a family to capture their precious memories is a privilege and as long as you approach it that way you can't go wrong, people LOVE feeling special and nothing makes you feel special like compliments and questions about your life - don't gush, be genuine but chat all the time it never fails.
