Team Up Thursday - Week 24

Theme: Ice

With the weather the way it has been in both England and Wales, this weeks theme seemed the obvious choice....plenty of subjects to photograph, all of which are ever changing. These were the icicles hanging outside out back door (ever so glad I wasn't underneath one when the finally broke away)

Claire's depth of field this week is perfect and I love the contrast of the blue sky background against the snow and ice on the twig....as always a fantastic capture.

Team Up Thursday - Week 23

Theme: Christmas Decorations

A logical choice of theme for this time of the year from my wonderful partner Claire.

I LOVE Christmas and had lots of plans to go out and photograph the lights in our high street for this week....sadly flu hit and I have been lying prone on my bed instead.

As I ate dinner in the lounge last night I glanced across at our Christmas tree and seeing the word "peace" hanging there lit by the tree's red lights made me really think that that is the true meaning of Christmas, it was the message God sent to the world through the birth of his son and it is something I think we could all do with a little more of in our lives. So here is wishing you peace through this holiday season, may you and your family be truly blessed.

I absolutely ADORE Claires photo this week, what a wonderful way to remember precious family during this time, especially those that are far away. As always the lighting is spot on and gives the photos a wonderful warm "christmassy" feel.

Team Up Thursday - Week 22

Theme: Culture
After such a very long break I am not sure if we should be starting at week 1 again lol.

Claire and I decided on this theme before I left for South Africa in October (yes it has been that long) but for one reason or another we haven't been able to participate in the TUT....I am delighted to say WE ARE BACK.

Beading is for me synonymous with African culture and on finding these wonderful pieces of craft work on Durban Beachfront I just knew I had my subject.

What could possibly say English culture more than an old building and in particular a church....Claire hit it right on the head this week and I just love the contrasts caused by the light filtering in through those windows....stunning stunning stunning.

Prize Winner - Night

Team Up Thursday - Week 21

Theme: Aperture

Am posting this TUT a day early as tomorrow I am heading off for sunny South Africa to spend time with friends and family so may not get a chance.

I really enjoyed this week's theme as playing with aperture has always been one of my fav parts of photography, getting that specific part of the photo crystal clear whilst the rest is softly out of focus.

Claire's shot this week could be from a commercial makeup shoot so well done partner, great example of aperture :0)

When the Bride is dressed in Black

A couple of weeks ago I was asked to photograph the 4th wedding of a friend of mine's uncle. I have to be honest I was really really nervous, I tend to shy away from weddings as there is no reshoot, you can't check your screen and ask the minister to "do that again please".

Anyway lots of rescue later, the venue had been checked, the outdoor "location" chosen and the day dawned.....fortunately the church where the ceremony (and reception) were held is a very relaxed family church and it wasn't long before I was able to relax and have some fun.

I tried to spend some time before the wedding photographing the details and some of the guests in candid poses as they waited for the bride to arrive - all the things she didn't get to see.

When the bride arrived dressed in black I had to rethink a lot of the traditional shots I had in my mind, but one thing I am learning is to go with the flow and at the end of the day this elegant lady and her gallant new husband really relaxed and got into the swing of things.

I found it quite difficult to capture all the important moments in the church without being intrusive, after all the bride and groom should be completely in the moment and not worrying about the photographer - no flash was used obviously but the church is very nice and light so didn't present to much of a problem.

We chose a nearby park for the photographs which on a magnificent autumn afternoon presented a little bit of a problem as far as crowds where concerned, but with a few creative camera angles gladly we managed to avoid adding them to the pics.

Neither the bride or groom felt particularly comfortable in front of the camera so we went for the more relaxed shots, I encouraged them to chat and laugh and tried to capture the moments rather than set up formal poses.

I loved a stain glass window I found on the side of the church, the cross was perfectly placed and I like the imagery I was able to create with the rings.

Speeches presented their own set of challenges as by now the light was really low, again shooting without flash I am very lucky the Nikon is a very versatile camera and was brilliant in low lighting situations.

Will I do it again? I am not sure...was it as terrifying as I thought it would be? definitely not. The bride and groom are happy with the photos so at the end of the day I achieve what I set out to do.

12th October Challenge

The idea behind this challenge is to carry your camera with you through the day and shoot 12 shots on the 12 day of every month....nice record at the end of 12 months...so here goes.

This is always one of my favourite sights in the morning....Nick sharing either or both his brother and sister's breakfast.....too long to wait for his own

Traffic on the school run can be a bit of a nightmare, but when it is as pretty as it is at the moment it really isn't too much of a hardship

As I had a couple of things to do in Haywards Heath this morning it was straight into the "pay and display" rather than home as usual

Things only open at 9am so as we were a bit early we went for a stroll down the High Street....the weather has been simply PERFECT the last couple of days
Had to stop for a quick hot chocolate and lemon cake at my absolute best coffee shop, The Bay Tree, owned by a fellow South African. I know I know Lemon Cake for breakfast :0)
The whole purpose for our trip was to buy Phil a mobile phone for his 10th birthday - mission accomplished

With such glorious weather a stop at Victoria Park was a must

Home to washing, a NEVER ending part of every day

and then a lovely catch up with Mom on skype

My dear friend Catherine joined me for lunch to say goodbye before we leave for SA

Once all my chores were done I could spend the afternoon finishing the scarf I am knitting for the winter

Finally at the end of a long, but lovely day it was story time for Nick Nick before bed
