Team Up Thursday - Week 9
Theme: Laughter
Recent research has shown that laughter can make us healthier and so my idea for this week was to try and capture it. I have since discovered that is isn't as easy as is sounds and I now have lots of photos with really grotesque expressions :0) I certainly never gave any thought to the way our faces can contort when we laugh and capturing the perfect moment can be really tricky.
Below is my capture caught of Megan and her best friend during Meg's birthday photo shoot, I must say I do love this one.
Claire's photo below is wonderful and captures the theme perfectly, you can just see what fun Skyla is having, such a happy moment.

Team Up Thursday - Week 8
Theme: Milk
This was Claire's idea and I confess to being truly challenged. I tried a couple of things this week with milk and even considered phoning the farm on Megan's school to ask them if I could go in and photograph the cows, however time ran out and I felt a little sheepish (not that brave yet lol) so below is what I ended up with :0)
Milk is for me wholesome and good and what could be more fitting than Nick enjoying his afternoon glass of milk out on our terrace - look at those chubby fingers, you can see he just LOVES it :0)
Claire's photo is EXACTLY what I would have LOVED to achieve - WELL DONE partner, think you need to let us know how you achieved that shot, it is OUTSTANDING

12th July Challenge

The idea behind this challenge is to carry your camera with you through the day and shoot 12 shots on the 12 day of every month....nice record at the end of 12 months...so here goes.
Woke up to not such a beautiful blue sky this morning, not cold at all, just no blue skies
Started the day making the children's school lunches, try to include a sandwich, fruit and small treat every day, being inventive can get tiring :0)
After dropping the big children at school it was home for breakfast for Nicholas - he loves this particular cereal as the evidence down his vest shows
Monday is housework day for me and I think these two are some of my most treasure possessions - in fact I spend more time with them then I do some of my friends lol
Catching up with friends and family on facebook once Nick went down for his morning sleep - gotta LOVE technology!
I have this quote in a very strategic place on my landing wall and I walk past it at least 6 times a day, it is a good reminder and when I am feeling a little low it ALWAYS picks me up
Waiting near the farm at Megan's school during the afternoon school run, I love it here, it is so pretty and I feel very privileged to send my daughter to a school with a working farm.
Afternoon tea and a photo shoot on our terrace....photo shoot for this weeks TUT challenge so couldn't show the results here, but could show my gorgeous new hybrid bizzy lizzy's ;0)
Potatoes all scrubbed and ready on the sideboard waiting to be turned into dinner, one of the things I enjoy about this challenge is getting inventive to show different aspects of our life - will make an interesting record for future generations me thinks.
My fav time of day when Si gets home, love watching him interact with his children - it is a very noisy but very happy time of day (don't look at the mess, it is the end of a long day with a two year old lol)
And so ends another 12th of the month in my life, next month should be great fun because Megs and Phil will be on summer break.
Family Photoshoot - July 2010
During the summer I tend to work outdoors rather than in the studio. We have such a very short period of wonderful weather and it is nice to make the best of it.
When I am working outdoors I tend to loosen the shoot up and spend lots of time running around behind the children, literally playing with them and talking constantly. This gives me the opportunity to photograph them when they are least expecting it.

I have two suggestions when working with kids and find they work every single time. First show them the camera, let them see what you are doing and even if they are really little let them look at it EVERY SINGLE TIME they ask to even if it feels annoying, you can't underestimate the value of a cooperative child and they will cooperate if they like you and they will like you if you show them the camera :0)
Secondly make them feel like the whole thing revolves around them, I tend to find out who their fav super hero is in advance and then tell them that is EXACTLY how super they are actually being, encourage encourage encourage - never mind impressing Mom or soothing Dad, if you can't win over the littlest in the family you are sunk.

My clients know that in the studio means formal "posed" shots while on location it is more about capturing the relationship between the family, showing the love they share and capturing those special magic moments. Although I do direct the shoot, I tend to rather watch for moments and then grow and expand on them rather than in studio where I will literally say, chin down, look right etc etc
I always try to have two locations in mind (within very close traveling distance, don't waste time, kiddies get tired and bored very quickly), this keeps things interesting and gives different lighting options and is especially important if the first location tanks.

I always conduct these shoots as early in the morning as possible (a) kiddies are likely to be fresh and willing (b) the light is much much softer and shadows don't factor and (c) if you are using a public venue you are far less likely to encounter members of the public - shoots start at 9am and last 60mins

Always remember being invited into a family to capture their precious memories is a privilege and as long as you approach it that way you can't go wrong, people LOVE feeling special and nothing makes you feel special like compliments and questions about your life - don't gush, be genuine but chat all the time it never fails.
